Problem with bandwidth metered by LunarPages and cPanel, so looking for a new host

by Feeder on Jul.17, 2009, under Web Hosting Talk

Hello,

right now I have a dedicated server with LunarPages. It’s a Dedicated Server III with the following specs:

Dual Xeon 2.80 Ghz with Hyperthreading
2 GB RAM
2,048 GB monthly bandwidth
Linux CentOS 4.7 with cPanel
3 IP addresses (server IP and two nameservers)

Right now I’m paying 255$ per month.

As of lately, I’ve got a problem with LunarPages. I control bandwidth via cPanel and LunarPages controls it with their own switch connected to the server.

cPanel measured around 700 GB transferred per month during the last months that it’s alright according to the historical usage of my server that just hosts a vBulletin forum with around 10,000 daily visits and picture attachments as thumbnails.

But Lunarpages measures around 2.5x that (1,800 GB) and they haven’t given me a detailed explanation about this discrepancy between cPanel and their measurements.

As far as I know my server has not been hacked and there hasn’t been any DDoS against my server. After five months, with the same 10,000 daily visits (+-10%) bandwidth consumed that it’s measured by LunarPages keeps growing and I don’t know what to do because they don’t offer me any explanation or details about this. I don’t know if their measurements are wrong or not.

I used to offer the picture attachments as full-size photos and then converted them to thumbnails in order to keep bandwidth controlled. When doing this, cPanel measured a change of bandwidth consumed from 60 GB to 20 GB daily (a third), but this wouldn’t be reflected by LunarPages measurements and they haven’t given me any reason for this.

So I’ve decided I have to change webhosts before my forum exceeds those 2,048 GB that limit the bandwidth consumed per month.

I would like to pay around the same per month, including a more generous monthly bandwidth and a better and newer server with a Core2Duo. Unmetered bandwidth would be a plus so I don’t have to be worried about bandwidth anymore.

Also I would like a new webhost with cPanel too so I could transfer my account from one server to the other (it would be a 70 GB transfer with old attachments from the forum).

I’ve seen FDC Servers that offer unmetered 10 Mbit/s dedicated servers, but I would like to know more reliable offers.

Thanks for any advice solving this problem or choosing a new webhost and best regards,

WHMCS security protection

by Feeder on Jul.07, 2009, under Web Hosting Talk

Just thought I would post some information regarding a "backdoor" in which many web hosts fail to secure.

If you run WHMCS on the same server you setup client accounts, someone can simply sign-up and easily access your WHMCS configuration file.

All it takes is for the user to upload a shell script and execute the following command:

Quote:

cat /path/to/your/configuration.php-file/

From there, they can access your configuration settings (MySQL) and create an administrator account.

How to fix:

If you have already disabled functions in your php.ini file, then you should be fine. If not, you will want to disable the following functions in your php.ini file:

Quote:

disable_functions="exec, shell_exec, proc_close, proc_open, pope n,system, passthru, escapeshellarg, escapeshellcmd, symlink"

You may want to enable safe_mode as well, but this may cause issues for certain scripts.

I would highly recommend installing mod suPHP and php cgi or simply move your "master" account to a different server.

any hosting suggestions for me?

by Feeder on Jul.07, 2009, under Web Hosting Talk

I’ve been researching web hosting companies for about a week, and came across this forum. I’m very impressed – what a helpful site for newbies like me! I’d like to ask if you have any suggestions as to which webhosting companies to consider.

I’m looking to host three websites:

1. I already designed using iWeb
2. want to start a Wordpress blog (to replace my current Blogger blog)
3. want to start a photo blog, probably also using Wordpress
4. (to be added down the road) want to be able to sell hand-crafted items (need a shopping card/Paypal/etc.)

I don’t expect to need a ton of disk space or bandwidth…just as long as I have enough room for my photos (1 gig or 2 would make me feel comfortable). I’d like to go as cheaply as possible, but still have reliable uptime and decent customer support (I’m a fan of live chat). I’m hoping to spend under $40/year, if possible. I’d like to be able to pay using PayPal.

At first I was thinking of going with JustHost or HostGator, but now I’m thinking I’d rather go with a smaller company. After poking around in this forum, I’m now considering HawkHost, PowerMonster, and JunaWeb. What do you think? Any other suggestions for me?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Nehalem 2.66GHz, 12GB RAM, 2×1TB HDs, 1gbps port for $399/mo

by Feeder on Jul.03, 2009, under Web Hosting Talk

Hi folks,

I do not run a data center, but I do have many servers which are colocated at SteadFast(.net). I have plenty of servers and bandwidth to spare. I have 10 servers with the following specs:

Intel Nehalem 2.66GHz
6×2GB (12GB) DDR3 1333MHz Memory
2×1TB HDs (up to 4 HDs)
Dedicated IMPI port
50mbps on a 1gbps port

They are all connected to a cisco 2950G switch on a GigE port and may push on average 50mbps. SteadFast’s network is very robust (http://steadfast.net/corporate/network.php) and 100% uptime is pretty much guaranteed. Please let me know if you’re interested. There is no setup fee and you may start instantly. If you want any upgrades, just ask and we can probably make that happen for a one-time fee.

Backscatter / Server rooted or hacked?

by Feeder on Jul.02, 2009, under Web Hosting Talk

This morning, I noticed that my Google Apps account showed 12000 e-mails in the SPAM folder. Checking into it, I saw that the spam were all undeliverables/ndr received back from my dedicated server with IP aa.bb.cc.dd that I’ve changed in the header.

I’ve been running RKhunter and Clamav which have been coming back clean.

I’ve blocked inbound SMTP.

There was a few thousand (at least) messages in /var/spool/mqueue and /var/spool/clientmqueue which I deleted and restarted sendmail after.

I need to run to a meeting but will be back to check on this … the header looks legit in every way that it’s from my dedicated server.

Help with my first order!

by Feeder on Jul.02, 2009, under Web Hosting Talk

Hello,

Someone has just made an order with me on Google Checkout. I went to Google and accepted the order. It said the credit card was charged successfully but the account has not been set up automatically. I’m using the default Cron that comes with WHMCS.

The information the client used is fake. Such as HI for the state / county.

What should I do? I have sent an email to the given email address.

Thanks all

Jack
