I recently upgraded to a new phone after my 16GB IPhone 3G screen cracked. Needless to say, I am left with this IPhone/MP3 Player/Video Playback device which I would like to sell. However, I have no idea how much it’s worth!

As you can see the crack is pretty minor in comparison to some breaks. The crack itself only affects the upper part of the screen where the clock shows and does not impact anything else on the screen (ie. buttons, video, etc…)

If anyone has sold one of these before or has any idea of how much i can get for it please let me know. A friend of mine is willing to buy it but I literally have no idea as to how much it is worth. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

We need an SSL certificate for a new domain. Shopping around GoDaddy is the cheapest. We don’t want extended verification, just a regular SSL certificate.

Are there any problems with their SSL certificates in terms of browsers accepting them or I don’t know, slow performance or something?

Is it due to some wrong IP configuration in WHM?

I have 5 domains on a vps but 2 of them are no longer resolving. They worked fine for a long time and all of a sudden they don’t. My host says they are there and are live yet people in Florida, Ohio and Michigan cannot see them.

The 2 sites in question are www .roguedragons. info and www .theleadershipgroup. biz Another site on same server and ns which is working is www .skru-u. com

At Godaddy I get this: "Warning! Visitors may not be able to access your site. Nameserver(s) NS1 .MATCH-SERVER. COM, NS1 .MATCH-SERVER. COM is not resolving correctly."

But my other domains work using the same nameservers. I am truly baffled. Does anybody have any insight to this? Any help would be greatly appreciated..

I think I had 1 outage back in August 09, this was a networking issue on the back bone side if I am not mistaken, before I could log a ticket it was back up. I think it was a problem on my side, so that doesn’t really count.

I now just had an issue with mysql engine, I noticed that it failed due to temp space, I immediatly from a remote location logged a ticket with stablehost, before I can even close the page, I received an email from Tyler, he was able to dial in and restart the sql engine and all is well. I need to research what I did wrong or just didn’t do properly but I would have been screwed if I didn’t have him.

There have been a few times where there were some ’security’ updates that were going to be applied, I was given ample notice of possible reboots and downtime.

Every time I asked a question, I have received an answer very quickly and not just some ****** automated response.

I am updated when tickets are closed.

I am happy with the price and billing support

I am more than happy with the technical response time, knowledge and the attention that I receive.

Hi. Recently setup a linux vm with cent os and cpanel. It is going to be used only for hosting my own created websites and I will be only person managing user accounts/uploads etc. Will also act as a mail server and a 2nd nameserver. I have done the majority of server hardening items I know of. i.e.

Latest updates of cent os 5.4 and cpanel.
Secure TMP, VAR TMP, DEV SHM
TMP mounted as separate filesystem
CHKRootkit, Rootkit Hunter install and daily e-mail
Blocked normal SSH access
Turned off unnessary services
Updated to latest Apace/PHP, added mod security and Sushoin
Brute force notification
Adjusted most items in Tweak settings to suit my requirements
Shell Fork Bomb Protection
Disabled compilers
Installed CSF and taken care of every important item it displays when running "check server security"

Just wander based on this setup and fact should not be any external clients with user account access how secure people think server will be.
My linux experience is not great and still learning so wander if there are any fundamental items missing that I should get a server management company to aid with. I don’t really want full time monthly subscription as don’t think going to be much regular change to server/websites hence are there any firms that do a one off security check audit and then I can go back for another check 4 months later to check everything still looking good.

I would like your thoughts on a Managed Windows VPS.

Our main concern is support. We lack the skills to manage a VPS ourselves and will need assistance with installation of various programs, DNN being one of them.

Budget is another concern, around $70 a month.

Hi all

I’m looking for some feedback regarding my company’s business model vs the standard for so-called managed services you see here on WHT.

We are offering Dedicated and VPS servers, these are to be fully managed by our support team. I know the idea of ‘fully managed’ varies from provider to provider, if you ask 10 companies you seem to get 10 different answers.

With our model the customer is not provided with root access as this makes it impossible to offer a truly fully managed service. Instead they would be given access to cPanel or similar at a reseller level so they can manage their websites but not make changes to the server configuration.

We would handle all software installation, configuration and any updates. We would also make any configuration changes required by the customer and pro-actively monitor the servers.

My personal experience of managed hosting comes from working at <a href="http://www.2e2.com/” target=”_blank”>2e2, so my idea of a managed service is likely to be a world away from the ideas that many companies have of managed hosting; what with change management and ITIL etc. As such I am interested to know more of what the ‘WHT crowd’ feel about this kind of service.

What do the people of WHT feel about fully managed services and the customer having no root access to the server?

Is there anything current providers do or don’t do that you would like to change?

All comments, ideas and suggestions are very welcome! Especially comments from providers offering a managed service, and what they mean by that or anyone that has used or is using this kind of service.

You advice on this forum would be much appreciated. I am not an IT manager, but a director of a small and growing business (under 10 consultants) whose employees work remotely most of the time. Please forgive me if my questions are naive.

I am not sure if I am looking for ‘cloud hosting’, or VPS or something else, but here is what we are after.

1. A VPN connection to a ’shared’ desktop, where we can access, upload and download files and run certain shared programmes, such as a client database/microsoft access etc. It occurs to me that I am not looking for a server necessarily, but rather a something like a normal PC that is accessible to all. I dont know if this is possible or not!

2. A sustainable solution that is able to add more users. The bandwidth requirements at this stage would be fairly low i.e. the transfer of files etc. Other things important to us are security, and of course, price.

3. We currently have webhosting and email hosted seperately. Your advice on whether we should integrate webhosting and email into the same service would be welcome. (Obviously I would need a server at this point). Or whether its worthwhile to leave these seperate.

Part of the problem is that I dont know what is out there, so any advice on who or where or what would be very appreciated.

Can anyone, who has used both Postfix & Exim please share some experience with me? Which of these 2 did you prefer to use, and why?

cPanel uses Exim (and AFAIK, only Exim), VirtualMin seems to use Postfix by default and often times when a custom server is installed a client doesn’t know which to use so we recommend Exim. But, what are the differences between these 2, from your experience, if you don’t mind telling me?

I have used Qmail on FreeBSD 4.8 last and don’t even consider this as a good mail system anymore, so I’m not even looking at it right now.

I have an owned 3.x vBulletin license which i do not require. The support expires on the 4th of September 2010. The license has access to vBulletin 4.x as well.

I’m asking for ~$140USD.

Few months ago while thenynoc was offering a free RAM upgrade to their VPS packages, we bought a VPS from them to use as a staging server and to test some of our apps in that much burstable resources. And I must agree, that was one of the worst decision in our dev team

So, we bought the server for six months, for $72. since then, the server remains unavailable most of the time. I have worked in openvz and xen based system previously, and it was really not even close to be good. The server was slow, was timing out very frequently and it took huge time to respond some time. After a certain period when we had understood that we cant really make use of this server, we tried to just use it for basic testing. But still then, installing and upgrading any package (we tried debian, ubuntu and centos latest 64bit versions). Sometime the shell was ok, but as soon we try to install anything, it started taking huge time.

The final fun was the acquisition of this ****** VPS service by someone named SteadFast. We’ve got a mail from them about this acquisition and they informed us network will be better and blah blah blah, then they told that the server migration will take place very soon.

The ****** service continued to happen. After another month, we got another mail from them telling us that SteadFast will now change the server to new machines, hence server will have a new IP and and they are sorry for any inconvenience and blah blah blah. They expect that server migration will be done in 7 days from march 3 to march 10.

Still we are in that old ****** server. No serious customer care, not even upto the mark of being called a "customer service" I think TheNyNOC is one of the living nightmare for all the VPS customers.

We’ve lost our $72 usd, we really didnt find any use of that server and I never expect a service can be such low graded. Whatever. It was really a bad luck.

I’m trying to work out the best way of tracking sales for commision based agents. Using WHMCS so far I’ve come up with either

a) Giving each sales agent an affiliate URL
b) Having a drop down list on the order form for the end user to select

I’m thinking a) is the best choice as I can see customers just not selecting b) and taking away commision. Any other ideas for tracking?

2. We got this server specification in June ’09 and since, our website has been growing month on month. In recent time, Litespeed was added to our server.

3. Our server loads are now hitting 6.5 – 8.0 continuously during peak hours (Indian time 1100 – 2000 hours).

4. We’ve been told that now is the best time to split our website up into two servers i.e. One server for mysql (DATABASE server), and one for litespeed (WEB / APP server).

5. Would much appreciate advice on:

- Recommended specs for the second box?

- Should we consider Solid state disks? The vbulletin database is anyways only 3 GB in size?

- Any other tips? We are absolute newbies when it comes to the technicalities.

When we came up with the idea, the truth be told, people in LA were saying we were nuts.

The fact is I was not sure it would work, as it was our idea, and while it does incorporate some ideas of others, the design is unique.

We did however verify it with mechanical and electrical engineers and they assured us the idea was sound, so we went for it.

Last Sunday, we turned it on, and it worked and has not stopped.

We were very happy when we stood under the ducts and got cool air and when the data center cooled the servers with almost no power use. I had a big smile . It’s nice when something cool works.

And I must admit there is some satisfaction in proving the nay sayer and haters wrong.

I’m looking for a solid unmanaged VPS. I have several web sites I want to move over, but I’m working on a Drupal project that may lead to tens of thousands of hits a day. I don’t want my server to slow down or give 503 errors when traffic gets high. I’m thinking 512 MB of dedicated memory should be sufficient (running 32-bit Debian 5), but more is always better.

I was going to go with Ramhost after researching here, asking them several questions and running some pings on their servers, but they sold out of server space over the weekend and have an ETA of March/April posted on their web site. My current service is up for renewal in early April and I need some overlap to get my sites properly migrated, make any tweaks and MySQL changes, etc.

I’m considering Fivebean and Burstnet, but at this point I would appreciate any other recommendations. I don’t know how to find the IP addresses to run ping tests on the services I am evaluating either. I have also seen mention of 100 mbps vs 10 mbps. What does this mean and how do find those specs on a provider?

One off-putting item about Burstnet was the statement I found when I clicked on the BASIC MANAGED link. It seems almost everything is billed at $65/hour, even if your site gets hacked and they simply re-install your basic setup and you rebuild the rest from your own backups. On the flip side, Ramhost was very patient and helpful, even though I was just asking pre-sales questions.

I would appreciate any feedback from other members about their experiences with various VPS providers.

Email and chat is not an issue and with quick turn around for email I might add but phone support is another as the staffing is not there.
